Girls in sports, you’ve come a long way baby

Playing basketball in college,  I  can remember long bus rides to games for what seemed like twenty four hours away, our schedule was similar to the Men’s team but yet they flew to their games and rarely did they take a bus and when they did you can bet it was fully equipped with all the amenities.  Then along came Title lX which ensures girls have equal opportunities in all sports.

My niece 9th grade, thanks Title IX.

Girls are often overlooked when it comes to playing sports.  According to Women’s Sports Foundation  by age 14 girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys, but at the same time more than 700 girls are playing high school football.  So yes, girls sports has come a long way with the increase in resources and opportunities (availability of scholarships in every sport, professional leagues such as WNBA as well as opportunity to play overseas), but until we have erased the percentage of children who are physically inactive, be it boys or girls we still have a ways to go.
